“Praise the Lord” (Mary)
Introduction:
Do the the songs that we sing accurately remind us of and reinforce Biblical truths?
“Earworm” - “a song or melody that keeps repeating in one’s mind.”
Which is most important, the words or the music?
Words without a melody remains a poem.
A melody without words can still communicate an image and feeling that transports our hearts and minds.

Together great words and music transport us. The question is where.
With regard to Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, are the words scripturally accurate?
Some songs lack consistent theology. - Ps 51:11
Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
In the OT the Holy Spirit did not permanently indwell. But in the NT He does.
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

Are Joseph and Mary/Mary & Joseph, and the ways that we speak of them, consistent with the word of God or have we unconsciously accepted the distorted and misleading personal created by some theological aberrations?
Mary’s song of praise has been disregarded by most evangelicals, with the result that some others have taken this beautiful song that if so full of OT Scriptures and twisted their meaning to that extent of being heretical.
In her Psalm/Song, Mary:
13 year girl
No personal copy of the Scriptures, OT, but not only familiar but internalized and believed what read in the synagogue where those who feared the Lord, listened to the OT read and explained.
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read.
Rejoices in the Lord/who He is/what He has done for her - 1:46-49
Rejoices - a decision within which what must of seemed overwhelming - pregnancy, family, Joseph, community, synagogue, rabbis
The Lord whom my soul magnifies/exalts
Soul - depth, not superficial

My soul makes its boast in the Lord;
let the humble hear and be glad.
Magnifies/exalts
megaluvw - manifest in an extraordinary degree, magnify, exalt - magnificat - 1st word in Latin translation
While magnify is an accurate translation, we should understand magnify to equal exalt. Mary’s
Hold in high esteem - used re Pharisees - to be seen
None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem.
“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long,
God my Saviour
2 articles - “The God who is the (my) Saviour - God often referred to as Saviour in the OT - cc Ps 24:5
“But Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked;
you grew fat, stout, and sleek;
then he forsook God who made him
and scoffed at the Rock of his salvation.

And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.
Jesus - Joshua - “The Lord is Salvation”
Clearly spelled out for Joseph
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
Reference to God her Saviour reminded Mary of the words of Samuel, Isaiah and Hosea. Do these Scripture portions comfort our hearts?
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation,
my stronghold and my refuge,
my savior; you save me from violence.
I, I am the Lord,
and besides me there is no savior.
I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh,
and they shall be drunk with their own blood as with wine.

and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”
But I am the Lord your God
from the land of Egypt;
you know no God but me,
and besides me there is no savior.
With Mary’s reference to God her Saviour, there was her confession of her being a sinner in need of a Saviour. Mary was born with sinful nature. In the word of God, no where in the word of God is it even remotely hinted that anyone other than Jesus Christ, the only begotten, unique Son of God.
The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
“If they sin against you—for there is no one who does not sin—and you are angry with them and give them to an enemy, so that they are carried away captive to the land of the enemy, far off or near,
There they are, in great terror,
where there is no terror!
For God scatters the bones of him who encamps against you;
you put them to shame, for God has rejected them.
All we like sheep have gone astray;

Confessed unworthiness
God does use us for who we or others think we are BUT for our selflessness.
God’s tool chest - a rod - Ex 4:2 - a jaw bone - Judges 15:15 - 5 smooth stones - a handful of meal & a little oil - 1 Kings 17:12 - a cloud the size of a man’s hand - 1 Kings 18:44 - 5 barley loaves and 2 small fish - Jn 6:9
“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?”
For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.
“These seven are the eyes of the Lord, which range through the whole earth.”
But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.
All generations will call me blessed.
Blessed - divinely bestowed well being that belongs only to the faithful.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Poor in spirit - speaks of deep humility that recognizes ones spiritual bankruptcy apart from God and His grace.
But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’
He has done great things for me
He who is mighty
Holy is His name
